Reimagining our climate and energy benchmarks: Expanding our approach to accelerate the climate transition

Since 2020, the World Benchmarking Alliance has assessed 450 companies from the highest-emitting sectors on their need to align with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, a crucial step to safeguard our planet for future generations. We also assessed these companies’ contributions to a just transition, ensuring that the workers and communities affected by the transition to a low-carbon economy are adequately supported.

However, as the urgency of climate action grows, and the focus shifts from disclosure to implementation, so too must our approach.

From high-emitting sectors to all 2,000 companies

From 2025, the World Benchmarking Alliance is expanding its focus from assessing high-emitting sector companies to evaluating all 2,000 companies on our SDG2000 list. We are assessing the credibility and integrity of their transition plans, which includes making sure that workers and communities are included and supported throughout the entire process.

In a carbon-constrained world, every gram of CO2 matters, and every innovation is valuable. Every company, regardless of its sector, has a role to play in the transition to a global low-carbon economy, building resilience to climate impacts, and ensuring that no one is left behind. Furthermore, providing solutions for workers and communities is essential to ensuring broad support for climate action and ensuring that we transition at the necessary pace.

We look forward to sharing the results of all 2,000 companies in January 2026. We will also be sharing insights on the transition plans of the first 1,000 companies at COP30 in Belém, Brazil later this year.
