The World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has published the fifth edition of the Greening Digital Companies report, examining the climate performance of 200 of the world’s leading digital companies across the telecommunications, IT services and electronics sectors.
Digital companies are playing an increasingly important role in the global transition to a lower-carbon economy, both through efforts to reduce their own environmental impact and through the technologies, products and services they provide.
At the same time, understanding the sector’s own climate performance remains critical. Using publicly disclosed data, the report sheds light on how companies are performing across greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3), energy consumption, climate targets and renewable energy use. For the first time in 2026, it also looks at transition planning, providing a deeper view of whether companies are putting in place the plans needed to translate climate commitments into action.
Overall, the 2026 edition brings together findings on disclosure and commitments, transition planning and actual emissions reductions, helping to build a clearer picture of how the digital sector is responding to its climate impact.
The report will be officially launched on Tuesday 2 September 2026 by Dr Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, ITU BDT Director, during the Green Digital Transformation session that he will moderate at the World Telecommunication/Information and Communication Technology Policy Forum (WTPF) 2026.
Following the launch of Greening Digital Companies 2026: Monitoring emissions and climate commitments, the World Benchmarking Alliance and the International Telecommunication Union will convene a webinar on 3 September 2026 to examine what the latest findings reveal about the digital sector’s progress on climate action.
The webinar will unpack the report’s key findings and bring together perspectives from industry, civil society and international organisations to discuss where progress is being made, where significant gaps remain and what stronger action is needed to advance environmental sustainability across the digital sector.
The discussion will provide an opportunity to look beyond commitments and disclosure to consider how companies are translating climate ambition into credible transition plans and measurable emissions reductions.

This is the fifth edition of the Greening Digital Companies report produced by the Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) of ITU and WBA. ITU has been given the mandate to develop a programme in response to the challenges of climate change and the growing quantities of e-waste globally. It is involved in climate change activities including research, capacity building and development of international standards. In the ITU strategic plan for 2024-2027, target 2.5 aims for a significant improvement of the ICT sector's contribution to climate and environment action, as measured by concrete indicators including the global e-waste recycling rate and the contribution of telecommunications/ICTs to global GHG emissions.
Data in this report were collected as part of the WBA Digital Inclusion Benchmark, which assesses the world’s leading technology companies on their performance in enhancing access to digital technologies, improving digital skills, fostering trustworthy use, and innovating openly, inclusively and ethically. In addition, WBA produces the Climate and Energy Benchmark, which measures corporate progress against the Paris Agreement and covers 450 of the world’s most influential companies in high-emitting sectors such as the automotive, utilities, oil, gas and transport industries.
