Why benchmarks?

Benchmarks provide an essential tool for measuring and comparing corporate performance on the SDGs. They equip financial institutions, companies, governments, civil society and individuals with the information they need to exert their full influence.

Methodology Development

Dialogue and research

The process of developing a new benchmark methodology begins with an outline developed by the WBA team. At this stage, we review the latest literature, assess relevant global standards and frameworks, and speak with experts, allies, and relevant stakeholders. This helps ensure the benchmark is grounded in credible evidence and aligned with leading practice.

Methodology drafting and review

The draft methodology then goes through several rounds of internal and external review. It is discussed in depth with WBA’s Expert Review Committee (ERC) and, for newly developed methodologies, released for a public external consultation so that stakeholders can provide feedback. For subsequent updates or revisions, changes are guided by conversations with the ERC and targeted outreach to relevant experts.

Methodology publication

Once finalised, each methodology is published openly on the WBA website. This ensures full transparency about how companies are assessed. The methodology is used in WBA’s own benchmarks, but it can also be used, in full or in part, by external stakeholders such as investors, civil society, researchers and companies.

Benchmarking Process

Data collection and assessment

WBA analysts and research partners apply the methodology to assess publicly available company information, including annual reports, sustainability reports, integrated reports, websites, policies, and other key disclosures. All assessments follow a “four-eyes principle”, meaning each data point is reviewed by at least two people to ensure accuracy and consistency.

Company engagement

Draft assessments are then shared with companies, giving them an opportunity to provide feedback. This step helps identify information that may have been overlooked and allows companies to clarify or supplement their disclosures before results are finalised.

After company feedback has been reviewed and incorporated, benchmark results are published on the WBA website for anyone to use. WBA releases rankings, scorecards, datasets, and insights, all freely accessible to stakeholders including investors, companies, civil society organisations, media, and governments.

Methodology review and update

Following each benchmark publication, WBA reviews the methodology to ensure it stays aligned with the latest global standards, scientific developments, and lessons learned from the assessment process. This review draws on feedback from stakeholders, companies, and experts. Updates are then incorporated, and the development cycle begins again.
