Suez, headquartered in Paris, France, is a publicly owned enterprise operating in the water and waste management sectors. In 2023, SUEZ provided drinking water for 57 million people worldwide and sanitation services for more than 36 million people. The company has been in operation for 160 years and has operations in 40 countries, making it one of the oldest and largest water and waste companies in the world.
Summary
SUEZ reports on certain topics related to urban sustainability but lacks disclosure on many important aspects that would improve its performance. Suez discloses its efforts towards social sustainability. It is one of just six companies in the benchmark to disclose a time-bound target for improving affordability, by aiming to cover 100% of its contracts with a solidarity mechanism by 2030 to ensure continuity of waste and water services in cases of non-payment. The company also reports the share of its spending that goes to local suppliers, and has publicly available policy commitments towards anti-corruption, gender equality, human rights and labour rights.
In relation to environmental impacts, Suez reports partial data on its emissions, energy efficiency, waste generation, water consumption and water quality metrics. Many of these metrics were reported only for 2020 or are location based and do not cover the company’s entire operations. The company is encouraged to report regularly on these topics across all its operations to allow for a full evaluation of its impact on the environment and to track its progress over time.
