Centrica is one of the largest suppliers of gas and electricity to households in the United Kingdom, serving a total of 10.3 million people. It is part of the FTSE 100 Index, and operates under the trading names Scottish Gas in Scotland, British Gas in England and Wales, and Phoenix Gas in Northern Ireland. The company originated in 1812 with the incorporation of the Gas Light and Coke Company, before the UK gas industry was nationalised in 1948 and then re-privatised in 1986. It took on the name Centrica in 1997 when British Gas PLC demerged.
