Mazda increased its low-carbon vehicle share from 0% in 2018 to 0.8% in 2020, but this marginal increase was completely insufficient to meet its 1.5°C pathway. The company has committed to a 25% share of electric vehicles by 2030, but its 1.5°C pathway requires it to reach a 64.5% low-carbon vehicle share by 2030. The company should set out a more ambitious target for low-carbon vehicle sales, as well as a clear plan and financial commitments to achieve this.

No clear strategy, promotional initiatives, or financial incentives to encourage customers to purchase low-carbon vehicles was provided by Mazda. To meet its sales target of 25% low-carbon vehicles by 2030, the company should set out a clear strategy to promote its low-carbon vehicles to customers. This could include providing financial incentives such as charging equipment or discounts, marketing campaigns or customer financing for low-carbon vehicles.

Mazda is aiming to reduce its absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2013. The company is also aiming for a 50% reduction in scope 3 emissions intensity by 2030 compared to 2010.

The company plans to increase the share of electric vehicles to 25% by 2030. It has not set out how much of its planned capital expenditure will be dedicated to low-carbon technologies. Mazda has not published its plans to develop other business models.

Just 0.8% of Mazda’s total vehicle sales were low-carbon vehicles in 2020. The company did not disclose what proportion of its research and development expenditure went to low-carbon technologies in the 2020-2021 financial year.

Mazda’s scope 3 emissions intensity increased from 87.6 gCO2/p.km in 2015 compared to 95.1 gCO2/p.km in 2020. The company saw a decrease in scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity over the same period but not enough to align with its 1.5-degree pathway.

The company’s actions over the past five years have not led to meaningful reductions in emissions or an increase in low-carbon vehicle sales. Mazda could set more ambitious and more frequent emissions reduction and low-carbon vehicle targets.
