Southern California Edison (SCE), founded in 1886 and headquartered in Rosemead, California, United States, is the largest subsidiary of Edison International and the primary electric utility company for Southern California. It provides 15 million people with electricity across a service territory of around 130,000 square kilometers, making it a key player in the US energy industry.
Summary
SCE reports on numerous sustainability topics but has potential to strengthen its performance. The company demonstrates leadership in its reporting on affordability by disclosing the monthly electric bill for residential customers, the number of customers enrolled in alternative rate programmes and the total amount spent on billing assistance. Further, SCE discloses partnerships with local governments on issues such as building electrification and wildfire mitigation. SCE also assigns accountability for sustainability to its board, but should link ESG targets to executive remuneration to make sustainability consequential to the business. It should also disclose its process to identify and mitigate human rights risks to further its commitments to respect human rights.
SCE reports annually on its scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and discloses its commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. However, it should align its target with the 1.5°C pathway validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and demonstrate consistent reductions over time. The company discloses its climate adaptation vulnerability assessment to strengthen resilience to climate-related hazards. However, it should expand resilience planning to encompass all types of natural disasters beyond climate risks.
