Fonterra is one of the world's leading dairy exporters. Its branded products are consumed in over 140 countries globally, accounting for one quarter of New Zealand’s total exports. The company has a leading market presence in Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Indonesia and Malaysia, with 95% of its products exported to these and other overseas markets. Like many of its dairy industry peers, Fonterra is a cooperative, owned by 10,000 farmer shareholders with a processing capacity of over 16 billion litres of milk annually across 30 nationwide production sites. It came into existence in 2001 with the merger of New Zealand Dairy Group and Kiwi Cooperative Dairies, at the time the two largest dairy cooperatives in the country.
Fonterra is the top-performing animal protein producer in the benchmark, demonstrating leadership among its peers. The company performs strongly in both the nutrition and environment measurement areas, where it recognises and addresses its responsibility across all relevant topics, including targets and reporting on many of these. Although the company is weaker in the social inclusion area, it still discloses more information and activities than many of its peers. It also performs strongly in the wider category of food and beverage processing, demonstrating leadership among all companies with consumer products in their portfolios.
