Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid (EMT Madrid) is a municipal bus operator fully owned by the City Council of Madrid, Spain. Founded in 1947, EMT Madrid has Europe's second-largest fleet, with over 2,000 buses operating on 223 lines spanning 3,500 kilometres. The company serves 455 million passengers, covering more than 90 million kilometres annually.
Summary
EMT Madrid publishes reports in Spanish, demonstrating transparency. However, as the 2024 Urban Benchmark only assesses reports in English, EMT Madrid was not included in this year’s assessment.
The company’s exclusion from the assessment does not reflect the quality or scope of its disclosures. We acknowledge its reporting and efforts towards transparency. Regardless, given the company’s significant scale and global influence, we recommend EMT Madrid to consider providing its sustainability reports in English. Doing so will enhance the company’s engagement with international stakeholders, facilitating broader recognition of its achievements and alignment with global sustainability frameworks. It will also showcase the impact of its stewardship in advancing sustainable urban development on the world stage.
