Between 2015 and 2020, the emissions intensity of BYD’s vehicles when in use decreased by 52% to reach 40.7 grammes of CO2 per passenger kilometre (gCO2/p.km). This change matched the change needed from 2015 needed for the company’s 1.5°C pathway.

Whilst a high proportion of BYD’s vehicle sales are new energy vehicles, this proportion has seen a slight decline from 44.7% in 2018 to 42.6 % in 2020. Reducing emissions in-line with 1.5°C pathway requires efforts from all companies to continue to increase their sales of new energy vehicles and reduce internal combustion engine vehicle sales. BYD will need to further increase its new energy vehicle sales to meet its 1.5°C pathway, which forecasts 64.5% of sales to be low-carbon by 2030.

BYD provides various business products in public and private vehicles that fit with the low-carbon economy. Its company mission is to provide zero-emissions energy solutions. However, the company does not yet disclose a comprehensive low-carbon transition plan or set a group-level emissions reduction target to guide its business development. Consequently, how it plans to continue to increase sales of low-carbon vehicles and reduce internal combustion engine vehicle sales is not known. Improvement in disclosure will enhance the company’s performance in its low-carbon transition.

From energy generation and storage to its applications, BYD is dedicated to providing zero-emissions energy solutions. The company’s mission is low-carbon aligned, though it does not disclose emissions reduction targets.

Although many of the company’s products are low-carbon aligned, the company does not disclose a low-carbon transition plan nor plans to shift to a lower carbon product portfolio. It is unclear whether BYD intends to publish one in the next two years.

Though BYD offers many low-carbon products, it does not have a public transition plan yet. Consequently, how the company plans to reduce manufacturing emissions and scale low-carbon vehicle sales is not known.
