Groupe PSA is a publicly listed auto manufacturer headquartered in Rueil-Malmaison, France. In 2019 it had US$83.6 billion in revenue and sales of over 2.9 million vehicles. To date, the majority of Groupe PSA’s vehicle sales have been in the European region - approximately 85 percent in 2019 - with no US presence. The upcoming merger with Fiat Chrysler is set to shift the regional mix towards the US. Sales have been declining in other regions.

This year, Groupe PSA has a performance score of 12.2 out of 20 when assessed under the well below 2-degree pathway. This score is lower than its 2019 performance score of 13.3, when it was assessed using the less ambitious 2-degree pathway.

Groupe PSA continues to excel at efforts to promote sales of advanced vehicles with their marketing efforts: video promotions, information sharing, MyBrand EV Car and Free2Move Services apps plus deployment of staff as electric car ‘ambassadors’. It has maintained its strong emissions reduction target setting. However, it could improve even further by setting these under the well below 2-degree pathway and validating them with the Science Based Targets Initiative.

The pace of Groupe PSA’s collective vehicle in-use emission reductions has slowed over the 2014-2019 period compared to the 2013-2018 period assessed last year. This relates partly to the inclusion of more high emitting vehicles from Opel/Vauxhall, following its acquisition from General Motors, and also to the use of the more ambitious well below 2-degree pathway for this year’s assessment. However, given Groupe PSA’s relatively strong performance on research and development (R&D) investment, engagement with suppliers, management and planning for transition, and new low-carbon economy aligned business models, it can be anticipated that the collective vehicle in-use emissions performance of the expanded company will soon improve.

The company could demonstrate stronger transition alignment by providing more public financial details on its transition management, and by publishing well below 2-degree scenario and stress testing results in its planning, looking beyond the current 10-year analysis period.

The company is increasing the share of low-carbon vehicles in its sales but not yet at a rate fast enough to align to its well below 2-degree decarbonisation pathway. With 0.79 percent low-carbon vehicle sales in 2019, the company is significantly behind the 5.7 percent required for its decarbonisation pathway alignment. Groupe PSA’s most important focuses for improved low-carbon transition alignment could therefore be to rapidly ramp up sales of its full electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles and to maintain a low-carbon aligned approach post its merger with Fiat Chrysler.
