Ford’s progress on the electrification of its vehicles is limited. The company had a small low-carbon vehicle share of just 0.5 percent in 2019, a decline from 1.1 percent in 2018. This reflects poor performance on engagement activities to shift consumer preference away from high-emitting vehicles.

Ford’s ambition on electrification is also limited. It plans to make conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid options available for 50 percent of models by 2022-2026. Conventional hybrids are not considered low carbon in this assessment, as they do not remove the need for fossil fuel. Ford has committed about US$2 billion per year to these electrified vehicle solutions by 2022. It should direct investment towards much more ambitious low-carbon vehicle sales targets and more fully electric vehicles if it is to align with its well below 2-degree pathway.
