SDGs & Public Policy: A pathway to global sustainability
12 June 2024, 9:00 - 10:30
For the first time in 2024, the WBA’s Allies Assembly will introduce a policy session, inviting stakeholders to deliberate on the pivotal role of governments and public policy in propelling corporate contributions towards the SDGs. It acknowledges that corporate responsibility and accountability should proceed hand in hand with governmental actions. Governments not only have to fulfil their duties concerning global agendas but also play a crucial role in bridging societal expectations of businesses and defining corporate responsibilities.
There is a growing awareness that while voluntary initiatives by corporations towards sustainability have made significant progress, they need to be backed by regulatory systems that include mechanisms for enforcement. These systems should ensure that companies adhere to global norms concerning human rights and ethical business operations, exemplified by frameworks such as the UNGPs, OECD Guidelines, and the Paris Agreement.
This session will set the scene for the discussions in the breakout sessions later in the day and will address the role of public policy as a key driver of the SDGs.
