Sold product performance
The company has however made impressive reductions in its manufacturing emissions through purchasing renewable electricity and developing its own solar and wind installations. Additionally, both Tata and JLR have established initiatives to reduce supply chain emissions, and both collect emissions data and use this to help guide purchasing decisions.
To guide its transition to the low-carbon economy, Tata should set improved emissions reduction targets. Tata’s targets, which do not include JLR, to reduce its scope 1 and 2 (manufacturing) emissions by 40 percent by 2020 and 70 percent by 2040 are not ambitious enough to be fully aligned with the well below 2-degree pathway. JLR’s separate targets only reach to 2020 and so cannot provide a meaningful indicator of JLR’s future climate ambition. Therefore, Tata could further enhance its climate performance by setting ambitious scope 3 targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative for its vehicle in-use emissions.
