Renault

Renault is a publicly listed auto manufacturer headquartered in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. In 2019 it had US$62.2 billion in revenue and sales of over 3 million vehicles. Renault primarily manufactures cars in the EU and Russia which are also its primary sales markets. Its alliance with Nissan allows each company to focus on specific regions.

Renault has a performance score of 9.7 out of 20 against a well below 2-degree pathway. This is lower than Renault’s 2019 performance score of 13.2, when it was assessed against the less ambitious 2-degree pathway.

Renault performs well on emissions reduction target setting, manufacturing emission intensity reductions, and engagement with suppliers. It has led the way in setting Science Based Targets Initiative-validated targets to 2030 under the well below 2-degree pathway for both manufacturing emissions and vehicle in-use emissions. It could further improve its targets and low-carbon transition planning by looking out beyond the current 2030 planning horizon. Manufacturing emissions intensity has reduced by 15 percent since 2014 and the company has demonstrated strong supplier engagement, with the application of global carbon footprint reduction measurements throughout the whole vehicle life cycle.

However, the company’s ‘sold product performance’ – on vehicle in-use emissions – has worsened. This is partly due to the faster rate of emission reductions required under the pathway applied for this assessment, but also likely related to slow increase in sales of low-carbon vehicles. The company’s share of low-carbon vehicle sales has increased from 0.5 percent in 2014 to 2.1 percent in 2019, but still significantly behind the 6.1 percent required by Renault’s decarbonisation pathway. Also, sales of larger, heavier vehicles have increased over the assessment period.

Renault’s low-carbon transition is also undermined by a lack of transparency on financial aspects of its low carbon transition planning and on the scenario analysis results applied in its planning. Little evidence was found on business models beyond manufacture and sales of passenger vehicles, such as mobility services and low carbon infrastructure development activities. Renault has put in place some strong foundations for the transition, but it is not clear how this progress will be maintained over the coming decade.
