Nissan has a comprehensive set of low-carbon KPIs for 2022 and 2050 timeframes, including selling one million electric vehicles by 2022 and reducing raw materials use by 70 percent by 2050. It would improve its performance by setting intermediate goals between 2022 and 2050.
Nissan has been slowly reducing the share of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles in its sales (from 97 percent in 2014 to 94 percent in 2019). Its decarbonisation focus has been on conventional hybrids (4 percent of 2019 sales) but these do not count as low-carbon vehicles under an ACT assessment, as they do not operate on non-fossil energy sources for more than 50 percent of their typical use. To bring its vehicle in-use emissions in line with its decarbonisation pathway, Nissan needs to rapidly ramp up sales of advanced electric and/or fuel cell vehicles.
