Child labour
The company has the opportunity to disclose examples of remediation programs when cases of child labor are found in its operations. The company prohibits child labour in its supply chain and authorizes the verification of the necessary information and documents. However, it could provide details on a required age verification system. While the company does disclose grievance mechanisms for its suppliers regarding child labour, it could provide more information on how it is actively building the capacity of its suppliers to prevent child labour impacts.
Farmer and fisher livelihoods
The company has set up trainings on biodiversity topics for the small and medium-sized cooperatives of the aquaculture sector in Nicaragua but has an opportunity to demonstrate how it improves fishers’ income resilience through its procurement practices and supply chain relationships. Also, it could demonstrate how it identifies living income benchmarks and assesses living income gaps for some regions or commodities.
Forced labour
While the company prohibits suppliers from retaining workers’ personal documents or restricting their freedom of movement, it also has the chance to disclose a policy against allowing recruitment fees or related costs to be paid in order to secure a job within its supply chain. Additionally, the company can highlight its efforts to build the capacity of its suppliers in order to prevent forced labor.
Health and safety of vulnerable groups
The company has an opportunity to recognise and assess the health and safety risks to vulnerable groups, such as migrant and temporary labourers, women and young farmers. Furthermore, it could provide evidence of support activities that improve the health and safety of vulnerable groups.
Living wage
While the company states that its suppliers shall guarantee their workers a minimum living wage whenever possible, it has an opportunity to make this a requirement in all locations or disclose a target for paying a living wage across its direct suppliers. Also, it states that its suppliers shall consider indicators or indices of the cost of living of the country in question when determining the living wage but could provide further details on how it determines a living wage for the regions where it sources.
