Reviewing the latest policy developments to protect human rights: gaps and opportunities
12 June 2024, 10:45 - 12:00
Since their development there have been a number of efforts to introduce both national and regional policies to implement the UNGPS. These include the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), and within Asia, the Japanese Guidelines as well as ongoing efforts in Indonesia and South Korea, among other countries, to introduce national policies mandating human rights due diligence. The purpose of this session will be to explore these developments by reflecting on how national and regional soft & hard laws can help to serve a global aim.
This multistakeholder roundtable will discuss human rights due diligence legislation initiatives across the world and bring together a diverse group of actors – including businesses, civil society organisations, academia, international organisations and consultancies – to share insights, challenges, and best practices in the implementation and enforcement of human rights due diligence laws, as well as the impact soft law has on the processes companies adopt.
This session will work to foster a comprehensive understanding of the varying approaches and frameworks adopted by different countries, identify common obstacles and opportunities, and explore collaborative strategies to enhance the effectiveness of these policies. By leveraging the diverse perspectives and expertise of all stakeholders involved, the roundtable will seek to contribute to the development of more coherent, effective, and universally applicable human rights due diligence standards, ultimately promoting greater corporate accountability and the protection of human rights globally
