Hanesbrands markets everyday basic apparel in the Americas, Europe, Australia and Asia-Pacific. The company employs around 61,000 people in more than 40 countries. In 2020, it had US$6.7 billion in revenue.
Summary
Hanesbrands ranks 20th in this year’s Gender Benchmark with a score of out 28.1 out of 100. It displays leading practice across 4 out of 34 indicators and is ahead of industry peers on health and well-being and the marketplace. However, the company lags behind on representation and compensation and benefits.
Hanesbrands covers all of the cost associated with certain sexual and reproductive health services for its US-based employees. In the supply chain, it requires suppliers to address the specific health, safety and hygiene needs of their women workers and to have an on-site health clinic with credentialed providers. Through its advertising policy, the company commits to avoiding the endorsement of offensive or dated stereotypes related to gender and further provides content guidelines on what brands should avoid, for example portraying women in subservient roles.
However, Hanesbrands has not established a gender-balance (between 40-60%) at various levels of leadership. Furthermore, there is no evidence of how the company offers professional development programmes to women employees or women supply chain workers. While Hanesbrands provides childcare support to employees, it fails to provide at least 14 weeks paid primary carer leave to all employees globally, as recommended by the ILO. In the supply chain, there is no evidence that the company provides workers with formal contracts , a living wage or family-friendly benefits .
