Furthermore, the company could establish a policy outlining its approach to lobbying and political engagement. It has an opportunity to specify its stance of non-participation in political contributions and enhance transparency by divulging its expenditures on lobbying activities.
Provide and promote decent work
While the company assesses high-risk suppliers annually, covering safety and health, it could reveal a global monitoring approach for health and safety performance of its business relationships.
Moreover, although the company asserts paying at least the minimum wage, there is an opportunity to pledge a living wage by setting a time-bound target. It could also share its methodology for determining a living wage for its operational regions. Furthermore, while the company has set wage expectations for suppliers, it could add a requirement for them to pay a living wage and disclose how it supports such payments.
Additionally, the company is dedicated to advancing gender equality as per UN Sustainable Development Goal 5. It could go a step further and explicitly commit to gender equality and women’s empowerment in a broader sense. It could set related time-bound targets, and enhance transparency by reporting data such as the ratio of the basic salary and remuneration of women to men.
Respect human rights
While the company discloses its commitment to upholding human rights in its Sustainably Palm Oil Policy, there is room to broaden this commitment across all facets of its operations. Furthermore, even though the company outlines an annual audit process for high-risk supplier mills, also encompassing human rights issues, it could take a step further by detailing its approach in identifying human rights risks and impacts throughout its own operations.
Moreover, the company has the opportunity to elaborate on its method for assessing and identifying its salient human rights issues. It could also unveil a global system designed to address, prevent, or mitigate its salient human rights issues.
