Governance and accountability for sustainable development
The company discloses a remuneration policy related to sustainability performance but can further link this policy to enhancements in nature-related objectives and social issues. While stating that the board of directors has the expertise in social inclusion, there is an opportunity for the company to disclose whether its highest governance body has specific expertise with respect to the company’s most material sustainability topics including nutrition, climate, water, soil health, ecosystem conversion and biodiversity.

The company has an opportunity to disclose its commitment and commercial activities to improve the accessibility and affordability of nutritious foods.

The company has an opportunity to demonstrate how it is improving the nutritional quality of its products and to set targets to increase the share of more nutritious products in its portfolio.

Clear and transparent labelling
The company has an opportunity to disclose how it provides nutritional information on its products and how it supports consumers with making healthy food choices through its labelling schemes.

Food safety
The company has an opportunity to demonstrate that 100% of its own operations are certified to a GFSI food safety scheme/certification programme or other widely recognised (industry-specific) certification. Additionally, the company can disclose the percentage of food suppliers that are certified to a GFSI-recognized food safety scheme.

Child labour
The company has made a commitment to combat child labour in Malaysia by joining the National Pledge against Child Labour and will implement child labour protection programs, collaborations to ensure education access and awareness-raising programs. However, it could disclose more details on the actions already implemented if a case of child labour has been detected in its operations and supply chain. While the company prohibits the use of child labour by its suppliers, it could require them to have an age-verification system in place.

Forced labour
The company commits to respecting employees’ right to freedom of movement and ensuring that migrant workers have unfettered access to their personal identification documents. The recruitment agency employed by the company is expected to enter into a no-recruitment-fees policy contract. However, this prohibition of recruitment fees only applies to migrant workers. While it does not condone suppliers restricting workers’ freedom of movement, there is an opportunity for the company to disclose a prohibition on paying recruitment fees within its supply chain. Although the company has initiatives in place aimed at addressing the use of recruitment fees for migrant workers, it could indicate how it enhances suppliers’ capacity to prevent forced labour impacts.

Health and safety of vulnerable groups
The company has an opportunity to recognise and assess the health and safety risks to vulnerable groups, such as migrant and temporary labourers, women and young farmers.

Land rights
The company could require its business relationships to have a process to identify legitimate tenure rights holders paying particular attention to vulnerable or marginalised tenure rights holders, and to negotiate with them to provide adequate compensation.

Living wage
The company has an opportunity to set a target for paying a living wage across its direct suppliers and describe how it determines a living wage for the regions where it sources. Also, it could disclose the percentage of workers across its own operations or suppliers that are paid a living wage.

Act ethically
While the company prohibits bribery and corruption, it has an opportunity to use stronger language to turn the statement into a formal commitment. Furthermore, it has an opportunity to disclose its approach to lobbying and political engagement beyond a personal level in a public policy document and state that it does not make political contributions and divulge its lobbying expenditures.

Additionally, while the company states that it pays a legal wage and expects the same in its supply chain, it could disclose a time-bound target for paying all workers a living wage or state that it has achieved paying all workers a living wage. It could also describe how it determines a living wage for the regions where it operates and how it works to support its suppliers in paying a living wage.

Furthermore, it has an opportunity to disclose gender equality and women’s empowerment targets and the ratio of the basic salary and remuneration of women to men.

The company discloses statements committing it to respect the ILO’s fundamental rights at work in its operations and supply chain. However, it has an opportunity to use stronger language to turn the statement into a formal commitment.

Additionally, the company could describe a comprehensive process for assessing and identifying human rights risks and impacts across all its activities and supply chain, and its salient human rights issues. It could further specify what it considers to be salient human rights issues, how relevant factors are considered and how it acts to prevent, mitigate or remediate its salient human rights issues through a global system.
