Leading practices

Bank Rakyat Indonesia assigns decision-making and oversight of its sustainability strategy to the highest governance body, while implementation responsibilities are delegated to designated functions, teams, or committees. It transparently identifies key sectors, clients, and investees for engagement on climate-related issues and actively monitors emissions from its associated financing activities (Scope 3, Category 15).

The institution discloses the amount and/or share (in monetary terms) of products, services, and capital provided to small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Risks and opportunities

Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) has a materiality assessment that materiality follows the double materiality principle and has undergone independent assurance, however, it lacks objective criteria and does not present all considered topics. While KPIs exist for identified materiality topics, there is no evidence of forward-looking targets. Recommendations include linking senior executive remuneration to sustainability targets and disclosing lending amounts to priority sectors.

While the institution discloses its scope 1-2 emissions, it could detail its scope 2 emissions with reference to those being market-based or location-based and it is recommended that the institution should establish a climate transition plan covering its own operations, supply chain and portfolio.

Moreover, whilst BRI discloses the lending amount to Conservation of Terrestrial and Aquatic Biodiversity, as well as disclosing the issuance of green bonds, it should provide evidence of the amount devoted to specified nature-positive solutions. The institution could also disclose the process to assess risks related to ILO rights, and provide examples of actions taken on salient human rights issues from recent assessments.
