Bridging the gap between multinational companies and small-scale producers across the value chain
13 June 2024, 11:00 - 13:00
Food systems transformation is a value chain challenge that requires action from farm to fork. Small-scale primary producers are pivotal in transforming sustainable food systems. According to the first Food and Agriculture Benchmark in 2021, 54% of 350 companies were committed to supporting farmers and fishers, however only eight demonstrated leading practices. The second Benchmark iteration in 2023 assessment emphasised livelihood improvement. It showed that 27% of the 350 companies support fishers and farmers’ income stability through procurement and pricing practices. However, less than 4% of companies identify living income benchmarks or calculate living income gaps. Engaging small-scale producers across the value chain is essential in understanding and transforming our food systems.
Our goal for the session is to facilitate a roundtable discussion to share experience on how companies can engage small-scale producers in their operations. We will focus on expectations and recommendations for companies on better small-scale producer inclusion and priority areas of impact. The outcome of these discussions will inform how the Food and Agriculture Benchmark can create clarity for companies and be used as a roadmap for change as well as for key stakeholders to hold companies accountable.
