Dr Ebony Birchall

Deputy Director, B&HR Access to Justice Lab, Macquarie University

Dr Ebony Birchall researches and teaches human rights in the Law School at Macquarie University. She is the Deputy Director of Macquarie University’s B&HR Access to Justice (A2J) Lab. The A2J Lab conducts research, builds capacity of civil society organisations and provides advice to affected communities around access to justice for business-related human rights abuses. Her current projects with Professor Surya Deva and the A2J Lab include benchmarking top Australian companies using World Benchmarking Alliance’s methodologies, and producing a series of reports with support of the UNDP on various ‘justice levers’ which are mechanisms affected communities and human rights defenders can use to challenge business-related human rights abuses. She has also recently published a report on the impact of strategic litigation on corporate behaviour with Professors Surya Deva and Justine Nolan funded by the Freedom Fund.
