The Methodology for the Heavy Industries Benchmark 2024

Download methodology

The heavy industry sector, representing 18% of global CO2 emissions in 2022, stands as the final frontier in the global decarbonization journey. Achieving climate goals requires significant investment in emerging technologies and a shift in century-old production practices. How are leading companies addressing these challenges, and what net-zero deadlines are they committing to?

Using systems thinking, the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) identified 92 key companies globally – 12 in aluminum, 35 in cement, and 45 in steel production – exerting significant influence on SDGs and Paris Agreement goals.

This Climate and Energy Benchmark will, for the first time, evaluate the climate performance of the heavy industry sector using specific ACT sectoral methedologies complemented by a social assessment. This marks a culmination in striving for a comprehensive system view on the global energy use and decarbonisation efforts.
