Waste Management (WM), based in Houston, Texas, United States and founded in 1968, is the largest integrated waste management company in the world in terms of revenue, fleet size and customer base. With 26,000 trucks in operation, WM provides environmental services to nearly 21 million commercial, industrial, municipal and residential customers in Canada, Puerto Rico and the US. The company's network includes 337 transfer stations, 254 active landfill disposal sites and 97 recycling plants. WM and its largest competitor, Republic Services, together handle more than half of all waste collection in the US.

WM reports on numerous sustainability topics but has clear potential to strengthen its performance in many areas. WM publishes its sustainability strategy with its three core ambitions – repurposed materials, renewable energy and thriving communities – and sets time-bound targets for biodiversity, community engagement, energy, gender equality, waste, water and worker health and safety. However, the company should update its 2019 materiality assessment in order to reflect current risks and opportunities. It also has an opportunity to disclose more information on its local government partnerships and local economic impacts.

WM discloses its biodiversity initiatives, including the conversion of closed landfill sites to hiking trails and sports fields.
