Tokyo Gas is the largest supplier of natural gas in Japan, with a total customer base of 13 million. The company has operations in 11 countries and seven megacities, including Bangkok, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City and Tokyo. In 2016, the company expanded its operations by acquiring Chiba Gas, Tsukuba Gakuen Gas and Miho Gas.
Summary
Tokyo Gas discloses information on certain topics related to urban sustainability but lacks disclosure on many important topics. The company discloses its engagement with the local government on issues such as climate change, water use and the stability of the city’s gas supply. It also discloses its most material sustainability risks, and has assigned board-level responsibility for sustainability decision-making. Tokyo Gas can further improve its governance by publishing its policies and planned actions to address its material impacts, and by linking executive remuneration to targets beyond CO2 reductions to make sustainability consequential to the business.
Tokyo Gas reports regularly on its scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and water withdrawal, and discloses its approach to managing water consumption by optimising boiler operation and reducing steam loss. The company also has a comprehensive natural disaster response and recovery strategy, which includes emergency shutdown protocols during earthquakes and storm and flood damage countermeasures. However, it is yet to demonstrate quantitative improvements in its environmental impacts over time. Tokyo gas has a public commitment towards gender equality, but should formalise its overall commitments to protect human and labour rights in a policy document.
