Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit is a public benefit corporation responsible for overseeing transportation across the New York City metropolitan area in the state of New York, United States. Established in 1965, MTA is the largest public transit authority in North America, serving over 11 million passengers systemwide on an average weekday. Additionally, MTA manages over 850,000 vehicles passing through its seven toll bridges and two tunnels on weekdays.
Summary
MTA discloses information on some topics related to urban sustainability but lacks transparency in many key areas. The company reports on its contribution to the local economy, including the amount of federal and local grants it has received. It also reports on noise pollution, detailing measurement results and noise reduction strategies.
However, there are notable gaps in MTA’s environmental disclosures. While the company has set targets to transition to zero-emission buses by 2040, it should regularly report on its scope 1 and 2 emissions as well as energy consumption across its operations. MTA is also recommended to set interim targets to track progress toward its long-term sustainability goals. Additionally, while MTA has initiatives for regenerative energy and storage, its lack of specific techniques and tools for measuring and reducing energy consumption weakens its environmental performance.
In relation to social and governance issues, MTA should conduct a materiality assessment to prioritise its sustainability topics and should report this information. The company should also disclose its policy commitments to respect human rights. Furthermore, the company should address these gaps and provide clarity to increase the effectiveness of its approach to addressing social risks.
