The Metropolitan Electricity Authority of Thailand (MEA) is a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Interior. It was established in 1958 with the merger of the Bangkok Electric Works and the Electrical Division of the Public Works Department. The MEA provides power supply to 4.3 million customers over an area of 3,192 square kilometres, comprising Bangkok and two other major Thai cities, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan.
Summary
MEA discloses information on certain topics related to urban sustainability, but is lacking disclosure on many important aspects that would improve its performance. The company regularly conducts a materiality assessment to identify and prioritise its significant sustainability issues, and engages with internal and external stakeholders, including local governments, as part of this process. To further strengthen its sustainability management, the company should establish targets that cover all of its material topics, and incorporate these into its sustainability strategy along with planned actions to achieve these targets.
MEA discloses its outage management system, including new technologies and data management processes, which has reduced the frequency and duration of power outages for its customers. The company should strive for quality management certification for this system to ensure compliance with international standards. It also has an opportunity to provide complete disclosure of its greenhouse gas emissions, as the company’s reported data only covers scope 3 (but not scope 1 and 2) emissions.
MEA discloses statements committing to respect human and labour rights and prevent corruption. However, it can strengthen these commitments by developing formal human rights policies that are binding across its operations.
