The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (Kenya Power) owns and operates most of the electricity transmission and distribution system in Kenya. It has over 9 million customers across the country. The Kenyan government holds 50.1% of the company's shares and private investors hold the remaining 49.9%. Listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, Kenya Power is one of the largest companies in the country.
Summary
Kenya Power discloses information on certain topics related to urban sustainability but is lacking disclosure on many important aspects. The company has aligned its sustainability strategy with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including decarbonisation, electric mobility, environmental conservation and safe and inclusive work environments. It can improve its sustainability governance by disclosing its process for identifying its most material impacts and publicly assigning responsibility for implementing its sustainability strategy. It can also increase transparency around its stakeholder engagement efforts, including the purpose and frequency of engagement with different stakeholder groups.
Kenya Power publicises its Global Partnership on Output Based Assistance (GPOBA) program with the World Bank International Development Association (IDA) to provide low-cost electricity to low-income households. The company can strengthen this disclosure by reporting on programme outcomes and disclosing targets to increase access to affordable energy. Additionally, the company should address its reporting gaps on topics such as air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and water withdrawal, and establish formal policy commitments to respect fundamental human and labour rights in its own operations and through relationships with suppliers.
