Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Buenos Aires, Edenor is the largest electricity distribution company in Argentina in terms of the number of customers and volume of electricity sold. Its concession area includes 20 municipalities in north-west Buenos Aires, covering 4,637 square kilometres, and it has 3.3 million customers, amounting approximately to 9 million inhabitants. It is one of the few major energy distribution companies headquartered in Latin America.
Summary
Edenor discloses information on certain topics related to urban sustainability but is lacking disclosure on many important topics. The company discloses its materiality matrix, with 15 sustainability issues classified as maximum, high or medium priority. It also aligns its social, environmental and governance goals with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Edenor should further disclose its actions and policies to manage its material issues and publicly assign responsibility for the oversight and implementation of its sustainability strategy.
Edenor discloses its quality and environmental management systems, which have been internationally certified, and reports annually on the frequency and duration of power outages, as well as its scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. However, it lacks reporting on air pollution and water withdrawal, which are key topics for the energy sector.
Edenor reports that it has an Electricity Inclusion and Smart Consumption Program, which aims to increase access to energy for homes in poor neighbourhoods. It also uses Integrated Energy Meters to help lower tariffs for consumers. The company can strengthen its social sustainability efforts by developing formal policy commitments to respect human and labour rights in its own operations and through relationships with suppliers.
