CapitaLand Investment (CLI), established in 2000 and headquartered in Singapore, is a leading real estate manager in Asia and Singapore's first real estate investment trust (REIT). The company is publicly owned and has a presence spanning 23 major cities across Southeast Asia, China, India, Europe and the US. CLI operates and manages over 380 properties, encompassing business parks, industrial facilities, logistics centers, lodging establishments, offices, retail spaces, self-storage units and data centres.
Summary
CLI reports transparently on numerous sustainability topics. However, there is clear potential for the company to strengthen its performance in many areas. The company has identified its most material sustainability impacts and published a strategy to address them. It also shows its commitment to implementing this strategy by assigning board-level oversight, engaging various sustainability committees and business units in environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives, and linking staff remuneration, including remuneration of top management, to sustainability key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure accountability.
Further, CLI demonstrates good practices in managing fraud, bribery and corruption (FBC) risks through its FBC risk management framework, which includes detection, monitoring and independent review processes. However, it can improve its accountability on ethical practices by publicly disclosing a formal policy on lobbying and political engagement. From a social sustainability perspective, the company should disclose its human rights risk assessment process and incorporate quality, affordability and accessibility into its sustainability report and investment considerations to drive the development of inclusive and equitable cities. From an environmental perspective, the company should establish decarbonisation targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reduce its impact on climate change.
