Fast Retailing is a multinational retail holding company founded in 1963 and based in Yamaguchi, Japan. It owns several brands including Uniqlo, J Brand, Comptoir des Cotonniers, GU, Princesse Tam-Tam, Theory, PLST and Helmut Lang. The fashion group is one of Asia's largest apparel producers, with more than 240 factories in 11 countries and regions and a network of more than 3,500 stores and e-commerce sites in various regions. In 2022, it had around 118725 employees worldwide and reported USD 19,435 billion in revenue.
Summary
Fast Retailing ranks ninth in the Gender Benchmark and seventh in the apparel sector with a score of 41.5 out of 100. It is also the highest scoring company headquartered in East Asia & Pacific. It demonstrates leadership in the health and well-being and violence and harassment measurement areas across the whole benchmark, ranking fourth and fifth, respectively. Nevertheless, it has an opportunity to improve in the representation area.
Fast Retailing, like many other companies, performs well on having a violence and harassment policy and a grievance channel for its own employees and requiring its suppliers to have an effective policy and remediation process for addressing violence and harassment grievances of their workers.
However, the company has an opportunity to making a public commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment and disclose its global primary and secondary carer leave policy. It could also disclose its remediation process for addressing violence and harassment grievances in the workplace. Like most other companies, Fast Retailing has an opportunity to improve on disclosing gender-disaggregated turnover and promotion data, the ratio of the basic salary and remuneration of women to men in its total direct operations for each employee category, as well as strengthening its commitment to preventing violence and harassment in its supply chain, e.g. through requiring its suppliers to conduct trainings on this topic or to have dedicated policies in one or more local languages.
