Urban Outfitters is a lifestyle retailer that operates a portfolio of global consumer brands including Anthropologie, BHLDN, Free People, Terrain, Urban Outfitters and Nuuly. The company employs 19,000 people across its operations and has around 250 brand-dedicated stores throughout Europe and North America. In 2020, it had US$3.5 billion in revenue.
Summary
Urban Outfitters is among the weakest performing companies, ranking 31st in this year’s Gender Benchmark with a low score of 6.3 out of 100. It does not display leading practice across any of the 34 indicators and lags behind industry peers in all measurement areas, most notably governance and strategy and representation.
Urban Outfitters offers up to six weeks of fully paid primary and secondary carer leave to full-time employees, though the ILO recommends at least 14 weeks of paid primary carer leave. The company’s remediation process for addressing violence and harassment grievances in the workplace outlines clear disciplinary sanctions for the perpetrator. In the supply chain, it requires suppliers to prohibit behaviour that is sexually coercive, threatening, abusive or exploitative. Urban Outfitters supports gender equality and women’s empowerment in the communities where it operates through partnerships with Every Mother Counts, Living Beyond Breast Cancer and Girls, Inc.
However, the company severely lacks an overall commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment across its full value chain. It has not established gender-related targets , nor does it engage with employees or external stakeholders on gender issues. Moreover, Urban Outfitters has not established a gender-balance (between 40-60%) at any level of leadership, and there is no evidence of how the company offers professional development programmes to women employees or women supply chain workers.
