Based in the United States, Under Armour manufactures and sells footwear, sports and casual apparel. The company employs over 16,600 people across its operations and had a revenue of US$4.5 billion in 2020.
Summary
Under Armour ranks 11th in this year’s Gender Benchmark, with a score of 43.3 out of 100. It displays leading practice across 9 out of 34 indicators and is ahead of industry peers on violence and harassment. However, the company has considerable room for improvement on governance and strategy and compensation and benefits.
Under Armour actively prevents violence and harassment in the workplace by providing training to its employees on creating a workplace free of harassment and to its supervisors on preventing sexual harassment. It also has a process for investigating violence and harassment grievances that includes alerting external authorities if the complaint is about criminal behaviour and outlines clear disciplinary action for the perpetrator . Furthermore, Under Armour requires its suppliers to have an effective remediation process for addressing grievances, monitors this process and supports them with remediation where violence and harassment cases are reported.
However, the company does not display a commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment nor has it established gender-related targets across its full value chain. Moreover, Under Armour fails to provide at least 14 weeks of paid primary carer leave to employees, as recommended by the ILO, at least two weeks secondary carer leave , or offer them flexible work options to support their unpaid care burden. In the supply chain, there is no evidence that the company supports its suppliers in ensuring workers receive formal contracts or family-friendly benefits, such as childcare.
