Carter’s is the largest branded marketer of baby and children’s clothing in North America. Its Carter’s and OshKosh B’gosh brands are sold in more than 1,100 company-operated shops in the United States, Canada and Mexico as well as through department stores and other major retailers. The company employs over 18,000 people and had $3.1 billion in revenue in 2020.
Summary
Carter’s ranks 26th in this year’s Gender Benchmark with a score of 18.0 out of 100. It displays leading practice in only 2 out of 34 indicators. While the company is among the better performers on violence and harassment in the workplace, it lags behind industry peers in all measurement areas, most notably governance and strategy and compensation and benefits.
Carter’s has a policy on harassment and violence prevention in the workplace, as well as provides training to its employees that addresses workplace harassment and discrimination education . Furthermore, its remediation process for addressing violations of the company’s code of ethics outlines clear disciplinary sanctions for the perpetrator . In the supply chain, while the company’s Code of Conduct states that workers must be free to raise complaints in relation to harassment and abuse without risk of retaliation , there is no evidence that it provides further support to prevent violence and harassment among supply chain workers.
While Carter’s has a gender-responsive grievance mechanism for its employees and corrective action process for its suppliers, its overall performance in governance and strategy is poor. It has not established gender-related targets, nor does it engage with employees or external stakeholders on gender issues. Moreover, the company fails to provide childcare or other family support to support employees with their unpaid care burden or offer them flexible work options. In the supply chain, there is no evidence that Carter’s supports its suppliers in ensuring workers receive formal contracts, a living wage or family-friendly benefits.
