Amazon is one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms. The company employs nearly 1.3 million full-time and part-time employees across its operations in over 30 countries. In 2020, it had US$386 billion in revenue.
Summary
Amazon ranks 17th in this year’s Gender Benchmark with a score of 31.2 out of 100. It displays leading practice in 4 out of 34 indicators and is ahead of industry peers on compensation and benefits. It also shows strong performance on governance and strategy in the supply chain, though not at the corporate level. The company lags behind on representation and violence and harassment.
Amazon offers flexible working options to UK-based employees, as well as childcare and elderly care referrals to US-based employees. In the supply chain, it conducts supplier assessments that cover gender-related issues such as wages and benefits, non-discrimination and sanitation. It also aims to launch empowerment programmes to reach over 25,000 women workers by 2023. Amazon requires suppliers to employ workers through formal contracts as well as partners with Nest to increase workforce inclusivity of hand-worker artisans. Moreover, it requires all eligible suppliers to enrol in the ILO’s Better Work programme, which trains workers on their rights and helps them improve their wages.
However, there is no evidence that the company has established a gender strategy across its value chain or screens for gender-related human rights impacts as part of its human rights due diligence process. While Amazon offers several professional development opportunities to its women employees in the form of mentorship programmes and networking events, it does not support its suppliers in offering these opportunities to women workers. Furthermore, the company does not actively prevent violence and harassment in the workplace or supply chain, for example, by providing training to managers and workers.
