Terrena
Terrena is a diversified agribusiness with operations spanning much of the value chain. The cooperative operates in four main sectors - upstream (grains, vegetables, dairy, machinery, organic farming), advanced plant (seeds, flour milling), meat products and poultry, with a network of 21,549 member farmers covering over 2 million hectares of arable land across Europe. The company holds a top three market share position within the poultry and beef markets in France. Terrena came into existence in 2004 with the merger of three national cooperatives, Cana, Caval and GCA, and today its network is based around 500 assemblies called “Bassins de vie” (“living areas”), which take place each year with the elected farmers in their geographical area.
Segment ranking summary
Terrena sits towards the bottom of the ranking across all its segments. Among companies trading agricultural products and commodities, animal protein producers and food and beverage processors, it ranks 118th, 70th and 188th respectively. The company lacks transparency and lags in all measurement areas. As a result, it is largely behind most of its direct peers. Furthermore, unlike most of its peers, it does not disclose a sustainability strategy nor reports on many key environmental issues. Finally, it significantly underperforms in social inclusion as it fails to tackle all topics in social inclusion, most notably farmers’ productivity and resilience.
