Costco Wholesale
Costco Wholesale is one of the world's largest retailers. Established in 1976 in San Diego, it currently operates a membership warehouse club, offering its several million members a selection of nationally branded and private-label products. It purchases most of its merchandise directly from manufacturers and routes it to cross-docking consolidation points (depots) or directly to warehouses. Costco Wholesale offers a diversified product portfolio across food and sundries, hardlines, fresh foods, soft lines and ancillary, among others.
Segment ranking summary
Costco Wholesale ranks 132nd in the food and beverage manufacturers and processors segment and 40th in the food retailer segment. The company performs better relative to food and beverage manufacturer peers than it does relative to food retailer peers. Overall within both segments the company performs averagely in the environment and social inclusion measurement areas and below average in the governance and strategy and nutrition measurement areas. Given its consumer-facing role the company notably lacks disclosure on key issues such as responsible marketing, clear and transparent labelling of products, as well as increasing the availability and accessibility of healthy foods.
