On the 21st of September 2023 the World Benchmarking Alliance, Columbia Climate Law and Finance Initiative (CLFI) and European Finance Climact Project will host a hybrid event on the sidelines of Climate Week NYC. The event titled ‘Decarbonising the real economy: what does this mean for financial institutions?’, will discuss the critical elements that must be implemented to decarbonise the real economy. The finance sector has a key role to play in ensuring that we are not simply decarbonising portfolios by investing in already green activities but that financial institutions are supporting the transition plans of their counterparties.  During this event we hope to connect the dots between the transition plans of companies, financial institutions, and countries to ensure the acceleration of decarbonising activities. Using the CCSI’s report on “Finance For Zero: Redefining Financial-Sector Action to Achieve Global Climate Goals”, the learnings from ACT Initiative’s Finance sector method road-test, WBA’s Financial Systems Benchmark assessing 400 financial institutions and the European Finance Climact Project, we will present key opportunities and learnings. Additionally, we hope to facilitate discussions with experts to underpin actions that should be implemented by different key stakeholders to support financial institutions as they contribute to the decarbonisation of the real economy and support a transition aligned with Paris Agreement goals.

Speakers:

  • Perrine Toledano: Director of Research and Policy at CCSI
  • Karina A. Litvack: Non-executive board director for Terna, Founding Chairman of the Climate Governance Initiative
