Mobilising companies to ensure that the transition to a low-carbon, resilient global economy is fair, inclusive and leaves no one behind.
Higher-emitting sectors, including utilities and oil and gas, show more advanced just transition practices, likely due to greater regulatory scrutiny and transition exposure. Encouragingly, a number of promising cases can be found across other sectors, offering insights into how just transition approaches are being applied more broadly.
Social issues are typically treated as separate from climate strategy, leaving social risks of the climate transition poorly identified and managed. About 5% of companies integrate impacts on workers and communities into climate transition plans, but more efforts could be made to integrate social impacts into transition planning.
Reskilling and upskilling can help companies manage workforce disruption while creating shared social value. Only 10% of companies translate this opportunity into concrete commitments to strengthen skills and workforce resilience for their sustainability transition.
As a foundational pillar of a just transition, social dialogue and stakeholder engagement enable negotiation, trust-building and shared decision-making. However, many companies do not engage with their own workforce on just transition planning.
1,600 companies across multiple industries and sectors are assessed on how they integrate social equity, inclusivity and the rights of workers into their transition plan, using three indicators: Fundamentals of social dialogue and stakeholder engagement in a just transition, Fundamentals of just transition planning, Fundamentals of decent work, workers and skills for a just transition.
