Industria de Diseño Textil, SA (Inditex) is one of the world's largest fashion retailers and manages multiple brands including Zara, Pull&Bear and Oysho. It derives sales from 202 markets through its online platform. It also operates over 7,000 stores in 96 markets, primarily in Europe, the Americas and Asia, and employs over 108,000 women – out of a total of 144,116 employees – across its organisation. At January 31, 2021 the company had US$20.4 billion in revenue.
Summary
Inditex ranks sixth in this year’s Gender Benchmark with a score of 46.4 out of 100. It displays leading practice across 13 out of 34 indicators and is ahead of industry peers on compensation and benefits and representation. However, the company lags behind on health and wellbeing, particularly in the workplace.
Inditex is the only company that publicly discloses its gender pay gap across its operations globally. Furthermore, it uses a third party to verify its pay gap analysis and has taken active steps to address any gaps identified by joining the ClosinGap. Inditex is also the only company that requires suppliers to provide workers a living wage . The company further supports its suppliers in doing so through its involvement with ACT and IndustriALL and monitors the payment of living wages through its Compliance Programme which compiles detailed information on wages. Moreover, Inditex ensures workers receive formal contracts and supports suppliers through programmes to prevent the practice of abusive employment practice, such the Sumangali Scheme, that primarily affects young female workers
As for health and well-being , Inditex only requires that its suppliers provide access to clean drinking water which is not deemed sufficient to affectively address the needs of women workers. Although the company has partnered with WeDeliver – a global advocate that champions gender equality and the health and rights of girls and women – as part of its public commitment to gender-responsive health information and services in the supply chain, it fails to provide gender-responsive health information and services for its own women employees by ensuring coverage regarding maternal, sexual and reproductive, and mental health services.
