Ralph Lauren designs, markets and distributes lifestyle products, including apparel, footwear, accessories, home furnishings and other licensed product categories. The company employs 20,300 employees across its operations in 501 retail stores and 653 concession-based shop-within-shops worldwide. In 2020, the company had US$4.4 billion in revenue.
Summary
Ralph Lauren ranks 12th in this year’s Gender Benchmark with a score of 41.8 out of 100. It displays leading practice across 7 out of 34 indicators and is ahead of industry peers on governance and strategy and health and well-being. However, the company lags behind on representation in both the workplace and supply chain.
Ralph Lauren has integrated gender into its business strategy through the Design the Change programme, establishing targets to achieve gender parity in leadership positions and increase female representation in factory management by 25% by 2025. It also engages with external stakeholders to inform its gender efforts, such as the Asian University for Women (AUW) in Bangladesh. Furthermore, the company’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) covers some of the costs of mental health information and services and helps employees and their families cope with stressful problems at work or home. In the supply chain, Ralph Lauren has committed to providing gender-responsive health information and services to women workers through BSR’s HERhealth initiative, raising awareness around topics such as healthy eating, hygiene and maternal health.
Although the company supports its suppliers in offering professional development opportunities to women workers in the supply chain, by partnering with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for their Gender Equality and Returns Program (GEAR), there is no evidence that it offers professional development programmes with specific support for its own women employees. Moreover, Ralph Lauren does not disclose whether it procures from women-owned businesses .
