Marks & Spencer is one of the largest British multinational retailers of food, clothing and homeware. The company employs around 70,000 people in 1,519 stores across its operations and is present in over 62 markets worldwide. In 2020, the company had US$11.5 billion in revenue.
Summary
Marks & Spencer ranks 13th in this year’s Gender Benchmark with a score of 41.2 out of 100. It displays leading practice across 7 out of 34 indicators and is ahead of industry peers in health and well-being and representation. However, it lags behind on compensation and benefits and violence and harassment.
Marks & Spencer is a founding partner of the Halow+ Health project that aims to empower women workers, improve individual and community health , increase factory productivity and strengthen urban health systems. It also requires its suppliers to provide health and safety training to workers and has a health programme geared specifically towards women to ensure safer working conditions. Furthermore, Marks & Spencer supports an enabling environment for freedom of association and collective bargaining in the supply chain through its training course and toolkit on how to improve interactions between management, trade unions and worker committees. It also works with the Ethical Trading Initiative’s social dialogue programme in Bangladesh to help foster constructive industrial relations.
However, the company does not disclose its global gender pay gap or offer at least 14 weeks of paid primary carer leave , as recommended by the ILO, or at least two weeks of paid secondary carer leave to all employees globally. In the supply chain, it also does not ensure workers are provided with family-friendly benefits to support their unpaid care burden. Moreover, Marks & Spencer does not actively prevent violence and harassment in the workplace or supply chain, for example, by providing training to managers and workers.
