Lojas Renner is the largest fashion retailer in Brazil, marketing apparel, sporting goods, cosmetics and home furnishings under 20 brands. The company, which also operates in Uruguay, employs around 24,800 people across 351 Renner stores, 108 Camicado stores and 94 Youcom stores. In 2020, the company had nearly US$2 billion in revenue.
Summary
Lojas Renner ranks 22nd in this year’s Gender Benchmark with a score of 20.0 out of 100. It displays leading practice across 3 out of 34 indicators and is ahead of industry peers on governance and strategy. However, the company lags behind on representation, particularly in the supply chain, and health and well-being.
Lojas Renner is a signatory to the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles and has established a gender strategy across the value chain . It engages employees on a variety of gender-related issues through its diversity census, as well as engages with external stakeholders such as UN Women, the United Nations Global Compact and the Weaving Autonomy project to inform its gender efforts. In the supply chain, Lojas Renner ensures workers and other external individuals have access to its own grievance mechanism to raise complaints about suppliers or the company’s operations.
While the company maintains a gender balance (between 40-60%) at the senior executive and senior management levels within its own operations, it does not appear to collect gender data by leadership level among its suppliers. Furthermore, there is no evidence of how it offers professional development programmes to women workers or requires suppliers to have a policy that explicitly protects pregnant or married workers . Although the company requires suppliers to provide health and safety training to workers in the supply chain, it fails to provide gender-responsive health information and services for its own employees by ensuring coverage of maternal, sexual and reproductive, and mental health costs.
