Measurement finding

Violence and harassment

This measurement area looks at a spectrum of actions that a company can take to prevent violence and harassment in the workplace and in its supply chain. It also considers the process a company can implement to address and remediate claims of violence and harassment.

Overall, 31 companies (86%) disclose information on preventing violence and harassment either in the workplace or the supply chain. Most often these efforts are in the form of statements condemning violence and harassment and do not offer further insights into the company’s actions. Only five companies publish details of sexual harassment or domestic violence training they offer employees or require their suppliers to offer workers beyond mandatory code of conduct training. There was no information found with regard to companies’ remediation processes for violence and harassment grievances, either in the workplace or the supply chain.

29. Violence and harassment prevention

Twenty-eight companies (78%) disclose information that indicates a commitment to not tolerate violence and harassment in the workplace, and this usually comes in the form of a statement. Only four companies (Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, Fast Retailing, Kering, and Ralph Lauren) share information that shows that they provide training on violence and harassment that goes beyond on-boarding sessions. Kering, for example, provides 3-hour training sessions on domestic violence awareness for all employees.

30. Violence and harassment remediation

No information was found on whether companies effectively remediate claims of violence and harassment in the workplace, such as not requiring private arbitration or silencing agreements.

31. Violence and harassment prevention in the supply chain

Twenty-seven companies (75%) disclose information that indicates their suppliers are required to not tolerate violence and harassment. Only eight companies (22%) disclose that their supplier codes of conduct are translated in all the languages spoken by supply chain workers: Amazon, Fast Retailing, Inditex, Kering, Nike, Ralph Lauren, Under Armour and VF Corporation. Nike is the only company that indicates its suppliers are required to provide training on violence and harassment to managers and workers.

32. Violence and harassment remediation in the supply chain

No information was found on whether companies effectively remediate claims of violence and harassment in the supply chain by requiring suppliers to do so and monitoring them.
