Sociedad Quimica y Minera (SQM)
Sociedad Química y Minera (SQM) is a chemical company that operates through five main business segments; speciality plant nutrition, lithium and derivatives, iodine and derivatives, industrial chemicals and potassium. In plant nutrition, the company produces potassium nitrate as the core of its product portfolio. SQM was a state-owned company from 1968 until 1983 when it became a privately-owned enterprise, and today operates 20 commercial offices across five continents and with a sales presence in 115 countries.
Segment ranking summary
SQM ranks 26th in the agricultural inputs segment and lags behind most of its direct peers in the fertiliser sector. While it provides evidence of meaningful stakeholder engagement compared to its industry peers, the company only ranks in the top 10 of its segment in governance and strategy as it does not demonstrate a sustainability strategy covering all three benchmark dimensions. Similarly, it fails to show leadership in social inclusion due to a lack of disclosure on the impact of its support activities for farmer’s productivity and resilience. Finally, SQM falls behind when it comes to both environment and nutrition as it fails to address most relevant topics.
