Sanderson Farms is a vertically integrated poultry processing company engaged in the production, processing, marketing and distribution of fresh and frozen chicken. From a small general feed and seed business in 1947, it has grown to become a global concern with sales of more than USD 3.4 billion and approximately 623 million processed chickens in 2019. The company sells its fresh and frozen chicken products primarily under the Sanderson Farms brand to retailers, distributors and casual dining operators. It is currently the third largest poultry producer in the United States, operating 13 processing facilities, 10 hatcheries and 9 feed mills.
Sanderson Farms is active in the animal proteins and the food and beverage manufacturers/processors segments, where it ranks 22nd out of 92 and 86th out of 233, respectively. Compared to its peers in both segments, Sanderson Farms performs well on the social inclusion measurement area, although there is still room for improvement. On nutrition, the company performs well compared to its animal proteins peers, ranking 9th, but lags behind compared to its food processor peers, ranking 54th. The latter is particularly due to the company’s lack of commitments to improve the availability and accessibility of healthy foods. Moreover, Sanderson Farms has room for improvement in the environment and the governance and strategy measurement areas, ranking in the bottom half of companies for both segments.
