Gruma is among the world's largest producers of corn flour and tortilla. Founded as a Mexican food company in 1949, Gruma currently has 74 production and processing plants and a wide product portfolio consisting of corn and flour tortillas, tortilla chips, flatbreads, naan, pita bread, pizza bases, corn grits and other snacks and food products. Through its flagship brands Maseca and Mission, Gruma has a presence in 112 countries across North and Central America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. The US and Mexican subsidiaries, Gruma USA and GIMSA, account for most of the company's sales.
Active in the food and beverage manufacturers/processors segment, Gruma performs below average compared to its peers. In governance and strategy, nutrition and environment, Gruma is among the weakest performers due to its lack of disclosure. As a food processor, it is critical for Gruma to align with its peers on topics such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water and plastic use, and labelling. In social inclusion, the company has an average performance on farmers resilience which could be strengthened by providing quantitative evidence of the impact of its activities. While Gruma discloses evidence of grievance mechanisms for its workers and external stakeholders, it fails to commit to human rights and labour rights in its operations and supply chain thus lagging behind its peers.
