With projects ranging from residential and commercial buildings to roads and urban infrastructure, construction and engineering companies significantly impact the sustainability of built environments globally. The 2024 Urban Benchmark assessed 42 of the largest urban construction and engineering companies in the world, with operations spanning 143 countries. Construction companies have an average total score of 10.4%, with eight companies scoring zero and 26 (two thirds) scoring below 10%. The industry performs slightly better on social topics, with average scores of 13.9% in the area of inclusive cities and 15.6% on the core social indicators. However, it lags behind on environmental topics, with average scores of just 7.1% and 7.6% in the healthy cities and climate change and resilience measurement areas, respectively.
